O JAWS constitui um dos mais fantásticos softwares ao serviço de pessoas com deficiência da visão.
É esta categoria de softwares - leitores de ecrã - que fazem, de forma incessante e sem nunca se
cansarem, a leitura do ecrã para pessoas cegas com um resíduo visual muito baixo.
É usual ligar-se um leitor de ecrã, como é o caso do JAWS, a um sintetizador de fala. Eles de facto
andam ligados mas são coisas diferentes. O leitor de ecrã (JAWS, ou mesmo o HAL também
existente no mercado Português), como o próprio nome indica faz a leitura do ecrã e envia-o para um
dispositivo. Esse dispositivo tanto pode ser um sintetizador de fala (caso do Eloquence no JAWS e do
Orpheu no HAL) como também pode ser uma linha braille.
Nota prévia à configuração e versão do JAWS
O JAWS, graças ao padrão MSAA - Microsoft Active Accessibility, consegue ler sem mais delongas
no Internet Explorer.
Dos testes da equipa da ACESSO, foi possível com alguns truques colocar o JAWS 4.01 a funcionar
no Opera 6. Em termos de testes de acessibilidade à Web é bem mais visível e notório os problemas
ou não de uma página Web com estes dois sistemas. No entanto deixamos também aqui uma das
últimas versões do JAWS que inclusivamente se passeia já com certa à-vontade por páginas PDF.

Pode accionar o menu principal do Jaws pressionando em simultâneo as teclas INSERT+J. Aqui
seleccione o menu "Languages" e escolha em "Sinthesizer" Português.
