[Almost all of EU aquaculture production is consumed in Europe] Its share of total world aquaculture production is 1.5 % (8th) in terms of volume and just under 4 % (7th) in terms of value. Origin of aquaculture products consumed in the EU: 43% from EU; 57% Non-EU countries [Norway is the EU’s principal supplier ] “In Europe, aquaculture accounts for about 20% of fish production and directly employs some 85 000 people. EU aquaculture is renowned for its high quality, sustainability and consumer protection standards.” Frederico Ferreira, Cork, 23rd September 2015 3 FÓRUM OCEANO Aquaculture demands Global aquaculture production has grown by an average 8% per year for the last decade; production within the EU has decreased by approximately 10% Europe requires a sustainable aquaculture sector capable of contributing to the current and future global demands for seafood. [23.1 kg per person - Average Seafood consumption per year in the EU ] Lack of available maritime space for aquaculture activities should be overcome by identifying the most suitable sites Feufar Testa e Cunhas The production of farmed aquatic animals and the development of farming equipment must be supported by the most advanced R&D as well as innovative technology Feufar Frederico Ferreira, Cork, 23rd September 2015 4 FÓRUM OCEANO Offshore Aquaculture Advantages: Higher production due to increased fish density capacity Optimal environmental conditions for a wide variety of species Animals less prone to disease Reduction in environmental impacts Fewer user conflicts Significant economical and environmental benefits of multi-use platforms Tropos Frederico Ferreira, Cork, 23rd September 2015 5 FÓRUM OCEANO Offshore Aquaculture Technological Challenges: Offshore technology (i.e. cage design, construction materials) Maintenance and operations (i.e. technology for remote fish husbandry, feeding control software, autonomous feeding systems, fish processing, monitoring of water quality) R&D strategy, technology capacity, innovative solutions and business model for multi-use off-shore platforms Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems such as finfishseaweed-bivalves, as part of the solution for bio mitigation © Denis Lacroix, Ifremer and Malo Lacroix Tropos Frederico Ferreira, Cork, 23rd September 2015 6 FÓRUM OCEANO Offshore Aquaculture Self-propelled & self positioning mobile cages Frederico Ferreira, Cork, 23rd September 2015 7 Thank You !
